Application Requirement

 

Option #1:

 

Passing Score Sheet for the California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST).

 

 

Option #2:

 

Qualifying coursework with a grade of B- or higher, taken at a regionally accredited institution of higher education for academic credit toward an associate’s degree, baccalaureate degree, or higher degree. Qualifying coursework shall be a semester-length course of at least three units or the equivalent number of quarter units. The following courses are sufficient to serve as indicators of proficiency:

 

For reading proficiency: A course in the subjects of critical thinking, literature, philosophy, reading, rhetoric, or textual analysis.

 

For writing proficiency: A course in the subjects of English, rhetoric, written communications, or writing.

 

For mathematics proficiency: A course in the subjects of algebra, geometry, mathematics, quantitative reasoning, or statistics. A course that does not fall within a subject described above may also be sufficient. An applicant would need to provide documentation from the registrar or relevant department chair of the regionally accredited institution of higher education where the course was taken that includes the study of subjects in reading, writing or mathematics s those terms are described above. A course that meets these standards may combine the study of reading and writing.

 

 

Option #3:

 

Individuals can satisfy this requirement through SAT/ACT exams as follows:

	COLLEGE BOARD SAT (taken after March, 2016)	Math	Evidence-based Reading and Writing
	Qualifying Scores:	570	560
	COLLEGE BOARD SAT (taken before March, 2016)	Math	Critical Reading (or Verbal)
	Qualifying Scores:	550	500
	ACT	Math	English
	Qualifying Scores:	23	22

 

Proficiency in basic reading, writing and mathematics skills in the English language can be demonstrated through a combination of qualifying coursework, passage of a component or components of the state basic skills proficiency test (CBEST), and through SAT/ACT results.
