Fortune School of Education Accreditation

Founded in 1989 by the late Dr. Rex Fortune, a veteran superintendent and published author, Fortune School of Education was created by African Americans to strengthen the pipeline of diverse educators. Dr. Fortune recognized the urgent need to prepare teachers and leaders from underrepresented backgrounds, particularly in high-need fields such as mathematics and science. Our mission is built upon his vision: To cultivate ethical, transformative leaders who advance the public good through innovative, research-based practices for a democratic society.

In alignment with our mission, Fortune School of Education is accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) and has prepared teachers and administrators for decades. In 2023, the institution became a degree-granting through the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) and now offers a Master of Arts degree in Education and Social Justice, with the first cohort having graduated in 2025. Fortune is actively pursuing initial accreditation through the Western Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) to become institutionally accredited.

California Black Serving Institution
We have applied to the California Black-Serving Institution (BSI) initiative, a state-level effort to formally recognize and support higher education institutions that excel in serving Black and African American students. The initiative was established with the passing of Senate Bill 1348, which was signed into law in 2024. The initiative aims to address historical inequities and promote Black student success in California's colleges and universities.
